My name is Siobhan and I teach singing, guitar, composition, music theory and improvisation. I started playing music as a child and I still find it an unrivalled expression of joy and accomplishment. I picked up a guitar as a young teenager and started writing my own songs, then went on to university where I studied contemporary guitar with Jim Kelly and vocals with Leigh Carriage. Since then I have enjoyed collaborating on many projects as well as performing and recording my own music.
I have been teaching in various capacities (The Scarlett School of Music, The Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium, Home Studios) for the past 6 years and feel very lucky to share my love of music with students of all ages and abilities. I teach in a contemporary style which encompasses jazz, blues, folk and popular music. I like to give students a solid understanding of theory and technique while encouraging them to pursue the style and repertoire that inspires them. I approach voice lessons with particular care for students emotional and physical health as I believe that tension is one of the most common obstacles to healthy and joyful singing. While I don’t teach with grade systems, I can assist students with specific exam repertoire and techniques if required.
Ultimately I think music lessons should be fun and challenging, nurturing a love of music and an appreciation for practice.
